Martin Behrens is a Middle East specialist working for the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND). When he receives information from one of his contacts that leads to a drone strike against a terrorist wanted by the government of Zahiristan, his life quickly spirals out of control: a few days later, terrorists attack a Munich restaurant – a terror organisation from Zahiristan claims responsibility for the attack. According to the video, the attack was in reprisal of the drone attack.
Martin soon finds out that a staff member of the Military Counter-Intelligence Service (MAD) as well as Aurice, a freelance journalist with whom he was secretly in a relationship, are among the victims of the attack. Both had conducted research on the activities of certain BND staff. Martin suspects a link between their research and the attack on the restaurant. Is the Zahiri secret service to blame for the attack?
Martin confronts his superiors with his insights and must recognize that they are well aware of the fact that they are playing into the hands of the Zahiri president. But in a world in which large international conglomerates not only cash in through weapons sales, but also the corresponding aid programs to protect the civilian population, the BND’s hands are tied. Good and evil lie in the same hand – and both are profitable. There’s only one consolation for Martin: revenge for the death of his lover.
